Print Recipe Jump to Recipe

This White Chocolate Popcorn Valentine’s mix is a cheerful, sweet, and crunchy treat. Drizzled in white chocolate and mixed with M&Ms and sprinkles, the popcorn is highly addictive, easy to make, and perfect for Valentine’s parties, movie nights, and gifting.

What we love about this White Chocolate Popcorn Mix

I love salty-sweet snacks, and this is the perfect sweet and salty Valentine’s treat. There’s something about the combination of the buttered, salted popcorn and the white chocolate coating that is truly addictive. Add the M&Ms and sprinkles, and really, these disappear so quickly, and it is so good!

It’s really easy and fast. With only a few ingredients, it comes together quickly. Pop a bag of popcorn, then just follow the directions for melting the wafers on the back of the package. I like to divide the wafers in half and tint one half a pink color. I coat the popcorn with the non-tinted white chocolate and then drizzle over the popcorn the pretty pink colored chocolate. Sprinkle on top of the chocolate more M&Ms and the sprinkles, and you have a delicious treat in less than 15 minutes.

White Chocolate Popcorn Substitutions

I know what it’s like when you don’t have everything on hand, and the last thing you want to do is run to the store and pick something up. Here are a few ideas to substitute items on the ingredients list if needed:

  1. There are different brands of white candy melts you can use. I would just follow the instructions on the back of the package for melting. I like using Ghirardelli’s White Vanilla Flavored Wafers. Melted white chocolate chips could work too, or almond bark, but I haven’t recipe tested with those.
  2. I just use whatever buttered popcorn we have at home. If you don’t want the butter and salt, you can make your own popcorn or buy the popcorn flavor you like best.
  3. Any sprinkles work. This popcorn could be made for any holiday, so I would choose a sprinkle mix you like best for the holiday you are celebrating.
  4. I used one drop of Wilton’s Magenta gel food coloring. For a Valentine’s Day Mix, you could use red food dye, another pink gel color, or purple, or red. It mixes with the white and will be lighter. For a different holiday, choose the color of choice. You can also do all of it with just white without the dye/gel color.
  5. The M&M’s Cupid mix is so fun in this mix. You could do peanut M&Ms, or a different variety, and of course different colors for different holidays.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1. Pop the popcorn in the microwave according to package directions and pour it into a large bowl. Divide the wafers into two small microwaveable bowls. Melt one bowl of the wafers according to package directions. Make sure to stir well after heating the wafers in 15-second intervals until completely melted. Pour 1/2 cup of the M&Ms into the popcorn. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn M&M mix and stir to coat. Pour onto the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.

Step 2. Melt the second bowl of wafers according to package directions. Add 1-3 drops of food gel coloring and stir well until no more white is visible. Use a spoon to dip into the melted chocolate and drizzle the tinted chocolate over the popcorn. Immediately sprinkle over the popcorn the sprinkles and the remaining half cup of M&Ms. Let sit for 15-20 minutes for the white chocolate to set and serve.

Tips

  • This is a flexible recipe that can be made for any holiday using different colored M&Ms, sprinkles, and a different gel or food dye color to tint the white chocolate.
  • Lining the sheet pan with parchment paper is a big help with cleanup, and I highly recommend it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the white chocolate popcorn be made in advance?
Popped popcorn is best the day it is made, but it can last about a week in a sealed container. It will lose its best crispness, however, within a few days. As the popcorn is so easy and fast to make, I suggest making this mix the day you serve it, or the day before if necessary.
How do I store white chocolate popcorn?
a. Store the popcorn mix in an air-tight container for up to a week. I use a Tupperware container.
b. Popcorn freezes really well and can be stored in an air-tight container or Ziplog bag for up to a month. Some people say it tastes better frozen, and even tastes more salty and doesn’t stick in your mouth as much. I need to taste test this myself.

Ingredients

  • One 3.29-ounce bag of unpopped buttered popcorn

  • 10 ounces white vanilla flavored melting wafers (I used Ghirardelli’s)

  • 1 cup M&Ms, divided (I used the 10-ounce Milk Chocolate Cupid Mix Valentine’s Day Candy Bag)

  • 3 tablespoons Valentine’s Day themed sprinkles (I used the hearts and dots in Wilton’s Sprinkles Mix with Valentine’s colors)

  • 1 -3 drops pink gel food coloring (I used one drop of Wilton’s Magenta gel food coloring)

Directions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Pop the popcorn in the microwave according to package directions and pour it into a large bowl.
  • Divide the wafers into two small microwaveable bowls. Melt one bowl of the wafers according to package directions. Make sure to stir well after heating the wafers in 15-second intervals until completely melted.
  • Pour 1/2 cup of the M&Ms into the popcorn. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn M&M mix and stir with a spatula to coat. Pour onto the prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Melt the second bowl of wafers according to package directions.
  • Let it sit for at least 20 minutes for the white chocolate to set and serve.

Notes

  • I used one drop of Wilton’s Magenta gel food coloring. For a Valentine’s Day Mix, you could use red food dye, another pink gel color, or purple, or red. It mixes with the white and will be lighter. You can also do all of it without the dye/gel color to keep it white.
  • I just use whatever buttered popcorn we have at home. If you don’t want the butter and salt, you can make your own popcorn or buy the popcorn flavor you like best.
  • After the white chocolate sets on the popcorn, the popcorn will be a little stiff. If you are putting it in a container for serving, you will need to break it a little into chunks to fit your container, or serve from the sheet pan if desired.
