We love the ease and flavor of these Oven Barbecue Chicken Wings. The seasoned wings bake in the oven and then finish with an easy glaze of barbecue sauce with a touch of honey. They are the perfect crowd-pleasing wings for your next Game Day or gathering and are a family favorite.

What we love about these Baked Barbecue Wings

We are a divided house about wings. Half are Buffalo Wings fans and half are barbecue. I love both and when I make wings I always make both. You can use our basic seasoning to season the wings, but my FAVORITE way to make these barbecue wings is to use my homemade Cajun seasoning when baking before using the barbecue glaze. The Cajun rub is so flavorful and uses pantry basic spices. It comes together in just a couple of minutes. It doesn’t make the wings spicy, it just adds amazing flavor and really compliments the barbecue sauce.

These barbecue wings are incredibly easy. I use Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce and mix in a little honey. You season the wings, bake them in the oven, apply the sauce for the last 8-10 minutes and they are done! I have cooked wings a lot of ways, and I really love the flavor and texture when you roast them in the oven. The sauce perfectly glazes the chicken, and the flavor combination with the sauce and chicken is simply addicting.

These wings are a home run for any game day party or gathering and have proven to be a favorite at our house. If you are looking for another slam dunk wings recipe, try our Buffalo Honey Wings or our Cajun Wings with Remoulade Sauce.

Baked Barbecue Chicken Wings Substitutions

I know what it’s like when you don’t have everything on hand and the last thing you want to do is run to the store and pick something up. Here are a few ideas to substitute items on the ingredients list if needed:

  1. You can use our basic seasoning or our homemade Cajun seasoning. We really love our homemade seasoning and it takes less than 5 minutes to make. You can also use just salt and pepper or try a store-bought Cajun or Creole seasoning.
  2. Different varieties of chicken could be used, drumsticks, for example, and cooked for a longer time.
  3. You can use your own favorite homemade or store-bought barbecue sauce. You can also omit the honey if desired.

Step-by-step Instructions for Oven Barbecue Chicken Wings

Step 1. In a small bowl, whisk together the salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika OR the homemade Cajun seasoning ingredients. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the salt mixture or 2 teaspoons of the Cajun seasoning and 2 tablespoons of oil. Pour the seasoning mixture over the wings and using a spoon or tongs, toss to ensure the chicken is evenly coated.

Step 2. Line chicken evenly in single rows on the prepared baking sheet. Bake wings for 35 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven, using tongs turn the wings over, and bake for an additional 20 minutes.

Step 3. While the wings bake, in a small bowl, whisk together barbecue sauce and honey.

Step 4. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Drizzle half of the barbecue sauce mixture over the chicken and toss to coat.

Bake for 4-5 minutes. Remove the chicken from the oven and baste with the sauce, turn the chicken over and baste with the sauce again on the opposite side before returning to the oven. Bake an additional 4-5 minutes on the other side. Baste with the sauce an additional time over the top of the chicken. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve.

Tips

  • Instead of baking in an oven, you can cook wings in a well-coated slow cooker for 2-1/2 hours on high or 4-5 hours on low.  If you cook them too long, they can fall apart.  They can be checked with an oven thermometer and if they are at 165 degrees Fahrenheit they are done.  Continue with step 4 of the recipe and finish with sauce in the oven.
  • These USA sheet pans have been workhorses for me and work well roasting the chicken wings in this recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store Barbecue Chicken Wings?
Chicken wings can last covered in the fridge 3-4 days after cooking.  They taste best fresh the first day.  Make sure cooked chicken does not stay at room temperature longer than 2 hours.  Cooked chicken leftovers last up to 6 months in the freezer.
Can I make the wings and sauce in advance?
a. Store-bought barbecue sauce can last up to 4 months in the fridge once opened (some sources say longer, but Sweet Baby Ray’s website says there’s is good for 4 months and the honey doesn’t affect that much. You can make the barbecue sauce in advance before baking and serving the wings.
b. You can prepare the wings through step 4 and refrigerate them, then bake them for the final minutes with the barbecue sauce the day you are serving them.
What should I serve with Barbecue Wings?
Celery and carrot sticks are traditionally served with wings. Wings can be a meal or an appetizer served with other dishes. As an appetizer, wings are often served with pizza, sliders, nachos, fries, onion rings, tater tots, jalapeño poppers, vegetables with a dip, or other creamy dips. As a meal, they are great with any of the above-listed items as well as potato wedges, loaded potato skins, macaroni and cheese, Caesar salad or other side salad, garlic bread, fried rice, potato salad, or coleslaw.

Ingredients

  • Chicken wings:

  • 3 pounds chicken party wings, flats and drummettes (about 25 wings)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon pepper

  • ½ teaspoon garlic

  • ¼ teaspoon paprika

  • OR

  • 2 teaspoons *Optional Homemade Cajun Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil, divided (vegetable, corn, canola, etc.)

  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (we like Sweet Baby Ray’s)

  • 3 tablespoons honey

  • Optional garnish: chopped fresh parsley

  • *Optional Homemade Cajun Seasoning:

  • 2 teaspoons paprika

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 teaspoon thyme

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  • Dry wings with a paper towel and place in a large bowl.
  • Line the chicken evenly in single rows on the prepared baking sheet. Bake wings for 35 minutes. Carefully remove from the oven, using tongs turn the wings over, and bake for an additional 20 minutes. If the chicken doesn’t move easily, you can bake an additional few minutes on either side if necessary.
  • While the wings bake, in a small bowl, whisk together barbecue sauce and honey.
  • Remove the wings from the oven. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Carefully remove any excessive grease from the pan. Drizzle half of the barbecue sauce mixture over the chicken and toss to coat. You can also brush the sauce on both sides of the wings if desired or remove the chicken from the pan and toss the chicken in a bowl with the sauce before returning to the sheet pan.
  • Bake the chicken at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 4-5 minutes (or broil for about a minute less and watch closely). Remove the chicken from the oven and baste with the sauce, turn the chicken over and baste with the sauce again on the opposite side before returning to the oven. Bake an additional 4-5 minutes on the other side. Baste with the sauce an additional time over the top of the chicken.
  • Remove to a platter or individual plates, garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and serve with a side of ranch dressing.

Notes

  • I have used both foil and parchment paper to line the pan.  The parchment paper was a little more messy, but the chicken was less likely to stick to the pan with the parchment paper.
  • The wings I buy are “party wings” from the grocery store, already prepared as drumettes and wingettes.
  • We like using Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce with this recipe
