Remoulade Recipe Substitutions
I know what it’s like when you don’t have everything on hand and the last thing you want to do is run to the store and pick something up. Here are a few ideas to substitute items on the ingredients list if needed:
- You can use the homemade seasoning or Cajun (or Creole) seasoning from the store. We really love our homemade seasoning and it takes less than 5 minutes to make.
- You can use Dijon mustard, a coarse ground mustard, or Creole mustard. We don’t have Creole mustard at grocery stores in our area and I have used both Dijon and a Country Dijon mustard with great success.
- I use Frank’s hot sauce in this recipe but you can use a Creole or Cajun hot sauce if you find one in your area.
- I use dill pickle juice, but you can use sweet if that’s all you have.
- If you don’t have fresh garlic cloves, you can substitute with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, but I recommend fresh garlic if possible.
- If you don’t have lemons, you could substitute bottled lemon juice but the taste will slightly differ.

Tips

- I love using our homemade Cajun seasoning in the sauce. I prefer to use my homemade seasoning because I can adjust the heat tolerance for my family. You can also try using a Creole or Cajun seasoning purchased at the store.
